A simple Google Business Profile checklist for local businesses

Twelve clear steps to make sure your listing is complete, accurate, and easy for customers to trust.

When local customers need a plumber, dentist, mechanic, or contractor, they usually check Google Maps or search results first. A complete, accurate Google Business Profile helps them see what you do, where you work, and how to reach you. Here is a practical, 12-point checklist you can follow yourself to keep your listing in top shape.

1. Choose the most accurate primary category

Your primary category is the single most important classification for your listing. Pick the one that describes your core service as specifically as possible rather than a broad umbrella. If you are a residential plumber, choose “Plumber” rather than “Contractor”. Google gives the primary category the highest priority when matching local searches.

2. Add relevant secondary categories

Google lets you select multiple additional categories. Use secondary categories to cover other specific services you provide, such as “Drainage service” or “Hot water system supplier”. Avoid adding unrelated categories just to show up for extra searches, as irrelevant tags confuse customers and weaken your listing relevance.

3. Write a clear business description

Google allows up to 750 characters in your business description. Use this space to explain clearly who you are, what problems you solve, the areas you serve, and how long you have been in trade. Write in plain, honest language. Do not stuff keywords or paste URL links here, as Google does not allow links in the description field.

4. List your services

Under the Services tab in your dashboard, add each specific service you offer along with a plain-language description and, if appropriate, a starting price. Clear service items help potential customers confirm right away whether you offer the exact job they need before picking up the phone.

5. Keep hours accurate, including holidays

Incorrect opening hours lead to unhappy calls and negative reviews from customers who visit when you are closed. Make sure your regular weekly hours reflect when you actually answer the phone or open your doors. Whenever a public holiday or seasonal break approaches, set special holiday hours in advance so your listing clearly shows “Open” or “Closed”.

6. Add real photos of your work, team, and place

Upload clear, genuine photos taken with a smartphone. Start with a sharp logo and a clean cover photo. Then add photos of your completed projects, work vehicles, tools, and friendly team members. Avoid generic stock photography; real pictures build trust and let local people see the authentic humans behind the business.

7. Keep your business name, address, and phone number consistent

Ensure your business name, physical address, and primary telephone number match identically across your Google profile, your official website, and local directories. Consistent contact details eliminate confusion for visitors and ensure Google can verify your business location reliably.

8. Add your website and booking links

Add a working link to your official website homepage and, if you take appointments online, a direct link to your booking or contact page. Double-check that all links open securely over HTTPS and load without broken pages or redirects.

9. Post updates regularly

Use Google Business Profile posts to share fresh updates, seasonal tips, special offers, or recent completed jobs. While posts do not stay pinned forever, regular posting shows searchers that your business is actively operating and attentive to new inquiries.

10. Reply to every review, politely

When someone takes the time to leave feedback, respond promptly. Thank happy customers with a brief, genuine note. If you ever receive a critical or negative review, remain polite, acknowledge their concern, and offer an offline contact email or phone number to resolve the issue calmly. Never argue publicly.

11. Ask real customers for reviews without offering rewards

The best time to ask for a review is right after completing a job while the customer is satisfied. Send them a direct link to your profile via email or text. Never offer discounts, free gifts, cash, or entries into a draw in exchange for reviews. Incentivizing reviews strictly violates Google's policies and risks review removal or listing penalties.

12. Put common customer questions in your description and on your website

Google has retired the Business Profile Q&A section. To make sure potential customers still get quick answers to their most frequent questions, include the answers directly in your business description and prominently on your website's FAQ or service pages. Address turnaround times, service areas, and emergency availability directly where searchers can easily read them.

Google changes its features often. Check Google's own Business Profile Help for the latest.
